Wildcats Finish Road Trip with Split against St. Joseph’s

YAPHANK, N.Y.- The SUNYIT Men's Baseball team (5-8, 0-0 NEAC) finished up their weekend road trip with a double header split against St. Joseph's of Brooklyn (7-6) winning game one 7-6 before falling in game two 1-0.

Game one had all the makings of a pitchers duel in the early innings. That all changed however when a Wildcats 5th inning rally broke the game open. A 6 run top of the 5th pushed the visitors into what seemed to be a comfortable spot. They held on and took the 7-3 lead into the bottom of the 7th.  As usual however, the Wildcats wanted to make things interesting. With one out and runners on first and second, St Joseph's Joe Mendez connect with a ball and sent it flying over the left center field fence pulling the Bears to within one run. Following that, back to back ground balls by the Bears allowed the Wildcats breath again as they secured the 7-6 win.

Jeff Albright (New York Mills, N.Y. / New York Mills) went the distance for the Wildcats as he earned his second win of the season. Ryan Dungey (Vernon, N.Y. / VVS) and Kevin Rowlands (New York Mills, N.Y. / Notre Dame) led the Wildcats offense, each recording two hits on the game.

Game two turned out to be the true pitcher's duel of the day. The Wildcats Joe Redmond (Stone Ridge, N.Y. / Rondout Valley H.S.) and the Bears Chris Cutrone each went the distance combining to allow 12 hits, two walks, and only one run. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, that one run didn't go their way.  Following back to back 6th inning singles, a fielder's choice with two throwing errors allowed the lone run to score. That run proved to be enough as the Wildcats were unable to spark any late inning heroics, falling 1-0.

Joe Redmond threw 6 innings allowing only 5 hits while striking out 5 and allowing just one unearned run.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play nationally ranked Cortland St. Tuesday at 3:30 pm in their final game before NEAC play.
