Wildcats Get Clay on their Cleats; Split Season Opening Double Header

LAKELAND, FL.- The SUNYIT Men's Baseball team (1-1, 0-0 NEAC) split their season opening double header with Colby-Sawyer (2-2) Sunday.

It was a tale of two games as the Wildcats came out and had a tough time shaking off the rust in game one, falling by a score of 15-1. Colby-Sawyer rode a 7-run second inning and a 5 run sixth inning to take down the Wildcats. SUNYIT had several chances to push runs across but simply could not produce the timely hitting needed to spark a rally. Poorly timed errors and mental mistakes bit the Wildcats leaving the door open for the Chargers to score easy runs.

Game two was a different story however as the Wildcats bats came alive. The Wildcats scored 8 second inning runs in route to a 15-0 victory. The 15 runs came on 13 hits, which included two Kevin Rowlands (New York Mills, N.Y./ Notre Dame) triples, and 3 Jim Sass (Kingston, N.Y./ Kingston) hits. Ryan Dungey (Vernon, N.Y./ VVS) also chipped into the attack, adding two hits and 3 RBI to the Wildcat charge.

The big story however was the SUNYIT debut of pitcher Joe Redmond (Stone Ridge, N.Y./ Rondout Valley). Redmond went the distance for the Wildcats allowing just 4 hits, and 3 walks while recording 10 strike outs (6 looking) in his complete game shut out.

The Wildcats are back in action tomorrow as they take on Fitchburg St. at 12:00 and 2:00 pm in Winter Haven, Florida.
