Wildcats Win on Walk-off Single by Passalacqua

MARCY, N.Y. – Freshman Connor Passalacqua (Whitestown, N.Y. / Whitesboro HS) was in the game Tuesday evening for just one play, but it was a big one. After getting most of the day off, Passalacqua was called on to pinch-hit in the bottom of the 9th inning in a 5-5 game at Peter A. Spina Field. With one out and runners on first and second, the 5-11 righty stroked  line drive single to center, scoring pinch-runner Jhomel Solano (Bronx, N.Y. / Cristo Rey HS) from second base and giving SUNYIT (8-10, 2-2 NEAC) a 6-5 victory over the visiting Bard Raptors (3-11).

Fellow freshman Cody Doyle (Clinton, N.Y. / Clinton H.S.) picked up the win for the Wildcats, coming in to throw two scoreless innings in the 8th and the 9th while striking out two.

For the Raptors, lefty Adam Flowers went eight-strong, scattering 11 hits while striking out 7 and surrendering just 3 earned runs.

Starting on the mound for the Wildcats was senior Brandon Meszko (Syracuse, N.Y. / Westhill H.S.). The right-hander got off to a good start, striking out the first batter of the game looking on his way to a 1-2-3 inning, then stranding two runners in the second before running into some trouble in the third. He would be relieved in the fourth by Michael Rose (Chatham, N.Y. / Chatham H.S. ) who bridged the gap to the 8th inning for Doyle.

Offensively for the visitors, it was the top of the lineup doing most of the damage. Leadoff batter Tom Danz finished the game 2-for-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored, while freshman Ryan Conklin exactly equaled Danz's numbers out of the 2-hole.

The pair would tie the game in the top of the seventh, as Danz doubled and then scored on a Conklin single.

Coming up big for the Wildcats in addition to Passalacqua was senior third baseman Devin Frye (Barneveld, N.Y. / Holland Patent H.S.). The senior ripped a huge two-out base hit for the Wildcats in the bottom of the 5th, which scored two and put the Wildcats up 5-4 at the time.

The Wildcats will travel south next for a 4-game road stint, beginning this Saturday, April 13th at Gallaudet University. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
