Men's Baseball Earns Split with Colby-Sawyer

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – March 14, 2013 – The SUNYIT baseball team split a doubleheader with the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer at the Lake Myrtle baseball complex on Thursday afternoon. Colby-Sawyer won the first game 14-0, while SUNYIT took the second 9-4.

The Chargers  are now 5-3 on the season, while SUNYIT moves to 2-4.

GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 14, SUNYIT 0

Colby-Sawyer jumped in front with six runs in the second inning. Sophomore Rob Wallace began the scoring with a RBI single to right field. Senior Sean Gavin then knocked in a pair with a single to left. Junior Andy Lapple hit a two-run triple to right center and then came around to score on an error on the shortstop. The Chargers were aided by a pair of Wildcat miscues in the frame.

The Chargers struck for four more runs in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. Gavin reached on an error and was knocked in by a triple from senior Tyler Stotz. Lapple then singled through the right side to score Stotz. Freshman Jeff Dunn had a RBI groundout and senior Cameron Knight scored on an error to account for the other two runs.

Sophomore Alex Fredette hit a bases clearing triple in the fifth to put the Chargers on top 13-0. He then scored on an error.

Junior Kevin Keith earned his second win of the season after tossing six shutout innings. He had seven strikeouts, no walks and surrendered just five hits. Junior Steve Schack pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Ryan Dungey suffered the loss for the Wildcats after giving up 10 runs in three innings. Only four of the runs were earned. Cody Doyle threw two scoreless innings and struck out four in relief.

Lapple and Fredette each had two hits and drove in three runs. Gavin also had a pair of hits and drove in two.

GAME TWO – SUNYIT 9, Colby-Sawyer 4

SUNYIT senior Chandler Evans hit a two-run single in the top of the third to get the Wildcats on the board first. Sophomore Anthony Ragosta followed with an RBI to left field to spot SUNYIT a 3-0 lead.

Colby-Sawyer got a run back in the fourth on a RBI double to left by senior Cameron Knight.

Senior Devin Frye knocked in Jim Sass from second with a single to center in the top of the 6th. Sass pinch ran for Phil Mascitelli, who reached on a single. Freshman Ryan Wegner then brought in a run with a single to center. He later scored on an error to give the Wildcats a 6-1 lead after 5 ½.

Knight recorded his second RBI double of the game in the sixth. Senior Matt Muldoon added a RBI groundout and junior Vinny Monahan had a run scoring single to cut the deficit to 6-4.

SUNYIT responded in the top of the seventh with a two-run single from Sass and a RBI single from Wegner to secure the 9-4 Wildcats victory.

Senior Daniel Wiesek earned the win for the Wildcats. He went the full seven innings and gave up four runs on six hits.

Colby-Sawyer junior pitcher PJ Singster was touched for nine runs, but only two were earned.

Colby-Sawyer plays a twin bill against Wentowrth on Friday at the Chain of Lakes baseball complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 pm. SUNYIT plays two against Dickinson on Friday at 10:00 am. The games will be played at Southeastern University.
