Wildcats Sweep NEAC Athlete of the Week Awards After Outstanding Performances from Johnson, MacLachlan

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – Informed fans of the SUNY Poly Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams will, perhaps, be unsurprised to learn that both Kaleel Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y. / Syr. Acad. of Science) and Molly MacLachlan (Marcellus, N.Y. / Marcellus) took home NEAC Player of the Week honors on Monday. Each had outstanding weeks for their teams, helping the Wildcats pick up several significant conference wins. Below are excerpts from the NEAC Player of the Week press release:

Molly MacLachlan (Marcellus, N.Y.) has been selected as the NEAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after an outstanding week for the SUNY Polytechnic Institute Wildcats.  The freshman guard led the Wildcats to a perfect 3-0 week in conference play with averages of 25.3 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals per game while shooting 57 percent (29-of-51) from the field and 52 percent (14-of-27) from 3-point range.  MacLachlan opened the week with a game-high 23 points while also grabbing seven rebounds in a win over Morrisville State Wednesday, before again leading all scorers with 23 points to go along with eight boards and game-highs of three steals and two blocks in a win over Saint Elizabeth Saturday.  She then closed the week by scoring a season-high 30 points behind seven 3-pointers in a win over Penn College Sunday, where she also hauled in six rebounds and swiped a game-most five steals.  Her performance on the week helped the Wildcats improve to 7-1 in the NEAC North Division and 9-6 overall.  

Kaleel Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y.) has been named the NEAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after a tremendous week for the SUNY Polytechnic Institute Wildcats.  The junior forward led the Wildcats to a pair of conference wins behind two huge performances, starting with 19 points, a season-high 21 rebounds and four assists in a win over Morrisville State Wednesday, with the rebounding total being the second-most in school history for one contest.  He followed that up with 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds in a victory over Penn College Sunday to give him two-game averages of 19.5 points and 15 rebounds per contest while shooting 52 percent from the field (17-of-33) for the week.  Johnson is currently third in the conference in rebounds per game (8.4) for the Wildcats, who have now won four straight games and sit at 5-2 in the NEAC North Division after the perfect 2-0 week.
