Winning Weekend for Women’s Volleyball at Wells

AURORA, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Volleyball Team (3-13, 2-1 NEAC) captured a pair of key conference victories over the weekend at the Wells College Invitational. The ladies won their first two conference matches over Penn St.-Abington and Penn St.-Harrisburg before falling to defending conference champ Gallaudet on Sunday.

SUNYIT's first victory was a gutsy 3-0 win over Abington.  An exciting first set saw SUNYIT eke out a win, 30-28. The Wildcats then seized on the momentum swing to win the second set 25-18, and finally hung on in the third for a 25-23 win.

Kaitlyn Harrington (Central Square, N.Y. / Paul V. Moore) continued to lead the Wildcats, pounding out 15 kills in the victory, and first-year Erika Reakes (Central Square, N.Y. / Paul V. Moore) did a nice job in the libero role with 28 assists, while senior Jessica Sass (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston) registered an astounding 20 digs.

In the second match the Wildcats found their groove, blitzing Penn St.-Harrisburg 25-12, 25-12, 25-17. Everybody got in on the action for the Wildcats, as first-year player Deasia Goodman (Freeport, N.Y. / Freeport) – who only joined the team last weekend – had a breakout performance to lead the team with 14 kills. The 6-1 first-year player made her presence felt with 3 block-assists and one solo-block as well.

On Sunday the Wildcats fell to a veteran Gallaudet Bison team, but the emergence of Goodman as a potential force on SUNYIT's frontline coupled with a pair of conference victories made for the Wildcats' best weekend of the season.

SUNYIT will look to capitalize on the momentum of the weekend in an away match at Hamilton on Tuesday night. Match time is set for 7:00 pm.
