Women's Volleyball Defeats Hamilton for Sixth Straight Victory

CLINTON, NY – The SUNYIT women's volleyball team kept its hot streak alive, defeating local rival Hamilton College 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18) Tuesday night for its sixth straight victory.  The win places the Lady Wildcats at 14-7 overall, while Hamilton fell to 9-9 on the year.

 

After Hamilton took the first set, the Wildcats would score the first six points in the second set and never trail to tie the match at 1-1. The Wildcats then led for most of the third set, and after Hamilton closed to within 23-22, SUNYIT came up with the final two points to take a 2-1 match lead. 

 

SUNYIT would jump out to another fast start in the deciding set, going up 9-4 and forcing a Hamilton timeout before eventually closing out the game 25-18.

 

Junior Juleah Vedder (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) dominated the contest, hammering a match-high 27 kills to go along with 23 digs and a team-best three serve aces. Senior Nicole Higgins (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) also had a dominant effort, registering 39 assists, six kills and a match-high five blocks. Freshman Kaitlyn Harrington (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) chipped in seven kills, three aces and 23 digs, while fellow classmate Taviot Jackowski (LaFayette, NY/LaFayette) recorded 19 digs.

 

Hamilton freshman Megan McCareins finished with 16 kills and 16 digs, while junior Rachel Irizarry registered a match-high 25 digs.  Sophomore Cecelie Pikus tallied 22 assists.

 

The Wildcats will next head to the campus of Morrisville State for NEAC Pool Play.  SUNYIT will take on Cobleskill at 12:00 pm and Keuka at 6:00 pm on Friday before squaring off against Cazenovia at 2:00 pm and Morrisville at 6:00 pm on Saturday.
