Vedder Breaks Program Records for Kills and Digs in a Season as Women's Volleyball Goes 3-1 during Weekend Play

UTICA, NY – Junior Juleah Vedder (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) broke the program records for both kills and digs in a season as the SUNYIT women's volleyball team finished its regular season by going 3-1 during its weekend trip through the tri-state area.  The Lady Wildcats are now 21-11 overall, which ties the program record for most wins in a season that was set in 2008.

 

Vedder already owned both records that she broke, previously setting them last season.  Vedder, who is also the program leader in career kills and digs, finished the weekend with 78 kills and 43 digs to go along with 22 serve aces in 16 games.

 

SUNYIT split its first two matches during a tri-match at Kean University Saturday.  The Wildcats opened competition with a 3-1 win (25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21) over Kean and were led by Vedder's match-high 16 kills, 10 digs and five serve aces.  Freshman Kaitlyn Harrington (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) had 12 kills and two serve aces, fellow classmate Taviot Jackowski (LaFayette, NY/LaFayette) had 13 digs and senior Nicole Higgins (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) had 32 assists.

 

The Wildcats then fell to Baruch College 1-3 (25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 23-25).  Vedder had a match-high 23 digs to go along with 12 digs and two serve aces, while Harrington had 13 kills, 13 digs and three serve aces.  Higgins finished with 41 assists and 10 digs, Jackowski registered 15 digs and freshman Holly Loveless (Brewerton, NY/Paul V. Moore) tallied a match-high three solo blocks in addition to three serve aces.

 

SUNYIT then traveled to Polytechnic University for another tri-match Sunday.  They first took on Lehman College, winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-5) behind12 kills, nine aces and six digs from Vedder.  Harrington had 11 kills, eight digs and two serve aces, while Higgins tallied 25 assists, four digs and three aces.

 

SUNYIT would close out the weekend with a thrilling 3-2 victory (20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-6) over Polytechnic.  Vedder exploded for 27 kills, 15 digs and six serve aces, while Harrington also had a monster game with 21 kills, nine digs and three total blocks.  Higgins finished with 52 assists and three serve aces, while Jackowski recorded 25 digs, which is the fourth-highest total in one match in program history.

 

The Wildcats will now head to Keuka College for the NEAC Tournament this Friday and Saturday.  The team will open the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the NEAC North Division and will square off against Penn State Harrisburg in the quarterfinals.  The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm.
