Women’s Soccer Comes Up Big on Senior Day with 5-0 Win to Qualify for NEAC Tournament

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Soccer Team came through in the clutch on Saturday, qualifying for this year's NEAC Tournament by defeating the Mustangs of Morrisville State, 5-0.

By improving to 7-4 in conference on the season, the Wildcats earned a bid into the 6-team tournament. The team will most likely travel to Keuka for their first round game this coming Saturday, however no official release had been given from the NEAC office at time of publication.

The Wildcats have scored five or more goals in 5 out of their last 6 games (all wins), and are now riding a 4-game winning streak.

The team wasted no time in getting on the board, as first-year Kaelyn Francis (Worcester, N.Y. / Worcester) scored the game's first goal just 34 seconds into the contest.

Assisting on the play was SUNYIT senior midfielder Amanda Bohne (Clay, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse). Prior to the game Bohne was honored along with fellow seniors Margaret Werenczak (Mohawk, N.Y. / Mohawk High School), Stephanie Wurz (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Notre Dame High School), Katie Driscoll (Aurora, N.Y. / Southern Cayuga High School), Amanda Zarek (Massapequa, N.Y. / Farmingdale High School), Brittani Howell (Whitney Point, N.Y. / Whitney Point High School), Jamie Elderbroom (Chittenango, N.Y. / Chittenango High School), and Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater).

The lengthy list of seniors on this year's team features a number of accomplished players, including Stephanie Wurz, whose 33 career goals have her tied for the all-time SUNYIT lead. Despite going scoreless on Saturday, Wurz currently leads the Wildcats with 15 scores on the year.

The seniors certainly came up big on Saturday, as after assisting on Francis's goal, Bohne went on to score her own in the 13th minute to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Bohne would end the day tied for the game-high in scoring, as senior teammate Abbey Hanehan notched a goal and an assist as well.

Even primarily defensive midfielder and senior Jamie Elderbroom  got in on the action, scoring her 2nd goal of the year in the game's 33rd minute.

As for the defense, senior defender Amanda Zarek played terrifically in helping her teammate and senior goalkeeper Maggie Werenczak pick up her 4th shutout of the season, as the Wildcats held the Mustangs to just 6 shots and 2 corner kicks on the afternoon.

The Wildcats will now await an official ruling from the conference office to determine who they will play in the first round of the NEAC Championship Tournament, which begins on Saturday, November 2nd. Game time to be announced.
