Pair of Shutouts Propels Women’s Soccer to 2-0 Weekend

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Soccer Team (6-9-1, 6-4 NEAC) improved to 6-4 in conference with a pair of NEAC wins over the weekend.

On Saturday, the 'Cats went on the road to Wilson College and came away with a 7-0 victory. Stephanie Wurz (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Notre Dame) continued to light up the goal, recording her 3rd hat-trick of the season.

Wurz, a senior, scored the first three goals of the game for SUNYIT, all unassisted, then added an assist of her own later in the game on an Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) goal.

Also adding goals on the day were Kristina Strang (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont High School), and both Shannon Tooley (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy) and Erica Maisonet (Walkill, N.Y. / Walkill High School), with the latter two recording their first scores of the season.

In Sunday's matchup at the College of St. Elizabeth, it was again the seniors leading the way for the Wildcats.

Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) scored the first two goals of the game for the Wildcats, netting a pair of goals just 1:16 apart in the first half, with the first coming in the 27th minute.

First-year Samantha Hubinsky assisted on Hanehan's first goal, and Kristina Strang scored for the second-straight game at around the 40-minute mark to give SUNYIT a 3-0 lead heading into the half.

For the second game in a row, the Wildcats saw two new faces get into the action on offense. First-year player Hannah Mahoney netted her first goal of the game in the 60th minute, while senior co-captain Jamie Elderbroom (Chittenango, N.Y. / Chittenango High School) – who is a primarily defensive midfielder – found the back of the net in the 80th minute off an assist by Wurz.

The Wildcats, unbeaten in their last 4 matches (3-0-1) will look to take some of that momentum into a home game this Thursday, October  24th. SUNYIT will host the Albany College of Pharmacy at 7:00 pm.
