Wildcats Battle Tough Opponent, Fall to Hartwick on the Road

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Soccer Team took on another tough non-conference opponent Wednesday night, falling to the Hawks of Hartwick College, 4-1.

The Wildcats held their own for the first 35 minutes. After surrendering a goal at the 4:35 mark to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead, SUNYIT answered later in the half with a goal by Stephanie Wurz (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Notre Dame). On the play a miscommunication by the Hawks caused a collision between goalie and defender – Wurz seized the opportunity, taking advantage of the empty net to score her team-leading 7th goal of the year.

Late in the half, though, the Hawks pulled away. A goal by Allyson Daniels in the 36th minute was shortly followed by Kylie Thayer's fourth goal of the season, and the Hawks went into the locker room up 3-1.

To SUNYIT's credit, the Wildcats held strong on defense for most of the second half. Both teams were scoreless until the 86th minute, when Kristen McKasty scored the game's final goal.

SUNYIT was heavily out shot, and grinded to keep the game as close as it was. Goalkeeper and last week's ECAC Defensive Player of the Week Margaret Werenczak (Mohawk, N.Y. / Mohawk) made 10 saves on the day while defending an onslaught of 28 shots from the Hawks.

SUNYIT will continue their road trip with a 2:00 pm match up at Wells this Saturday.
