Wildcats Unable to Hold On after Strong 1st Half

MARCY, N.Y. – After 45 minutes of play on Sunday, SUNYIT seemed to have captured all the momentum, heading into the locker room with a  1-1 tie after a Stephanie Wurz (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Notre Dame) goal in the 39th minute. NEAC powerhouse Penn St.-Abington would take it back in the second half, however, scoring 2 goals to beat the Wildcats 3-1.

After a Desirae Holmes goal put the Nittany Lions up 1-0 in the 14th minute, the Wildcats battled back. Kristina Strang (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont High School) and Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) pounded the net, with Strang bending a beautiful shot that clanged off the crossbar.

Just when it seemed like SUNYIT couldn't catch a break, Wurz took advantage of a misplaced goalie kick and beat the keeper for an easy score.

Heading into the locker room, Penn State-Abington held just a 5-4 advantage in shots.

For the second straight day, however, the second half was unkind to the home team. Penn St.-Abington rattled off a 15-2 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes, connecting on two of those tries in the 61st and 78th minutes, and picking up another conference win to improve to 4-1 in the NEAC.

SUNYIT will stay on the hunt for their second win as they travel to Cazenovia this week on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm match up.
