Good First Half Not Enough for Wildcats in Loss to MCLA

MARCY, N.Y. – After picking up their first NEAC win of the year over the weekend, the Wildcats faced yet another tough non-conference opponent in the form of the MCLA Trailblazers on Tuesday night, falling 4-0 at home.

SUNYIT held their own in the first period, tying the Trailblazers with 5 shots. That all changed in the second period when speedy Trailblazer freshman Natalie Caney took over the game. The forward stole the ball at the 47-minute mark and took off, beating SUNYIT keeper Margaret Werenczek (Mohawk, N.Y. / Mohawk) one-on-one to break the scoreless tie.

The Wildcats, for their part, had a few opportunities in the second half but couldn't seem to get the right bounce.

Down 2-0, SUNYIT midfielder Amanda Bohne (Clay, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) checked into the game. The senior immediately let loose a shot from inside the penalty box that seemed destined for the net, but – indicative of the Wildcats' night - an MCLA defender unknowingly deflected the shot away from the goal.

MCLA would add two more goals over the second period, as Caney finished with a hat-trick. Kristina Strang (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont) led SUNYIT with 3 shots on the day, and Rebecca Pike added MCLA's other goal.

SUNYIT will be back in action for a NEAC weekend homestand. The Wildcats will square off against Penn St.-Berks at 3 pm on Saturday as part of Wildcat Weekend for alumni of SUNYIT.
