Net Eludes Wildcats in Hard-fought Loss to Lancaster

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT offense looked the best they have at home on the young season, but simply couldn't find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to perennial NEAC contender Lancaster Bible College.

Both teams played each other hard in the early going, with neither team able to find much in the way of offense.

SUNYIT got things going with a nice shot by Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) with 22 minutes to go in the first period. The play was started by a good steal and pass from Kristina Strang (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont), then Hanehan put one on the goal that bounced off Charger goalie Kaitlyn Scheuing's hands. The Wildcats looked like they might have a chance at it for a while, but the keeper dove on it before any SUNYIT players could get there.

The Chargers finally broke the scoreless tie late in the first half. A cross by Monica Horning was batted around before being headed in by Alyssa Wesner. The play took place right in front of the goal, as SUNYIT keeper Margaret Werenczek (Mohawk, N.Y. / Mohawk) came out to make a play for the ball but was unable to come up with it.

Down 1-0, SUNYIT came out hard in the second. Kendra Wagstaff (Candor, N.Y. / Candor) had the Wildcats first good try. The 5-8 forward was straight on with the goalie while a pair of defenders nipped at her sides. Unfortunately for the home team, Scheuing made a nice save by getting a single hand on the ball – enough to deflect the shot off to the side.

The Wildcats, for their part, gave themselves a number of decent opportunities in the second half. After a 4 shot first half, SUNYIT did a great job of putting the ball on net and finished the second by out-shooting Lancaster 12 to 4. Despite the Wildcats seeming to have the better of play, however, it was the Chargers who struck again in the second half. Again it was Wesner and Horning on the play: Wesner's cross deflected off the Wildcat keeper, allowing Horning to punch it in for the easy score.

SUNYIT's brutally tough early season schedule will continue on Wednesday, as the Wildcats travel across town to take on Utica College. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
