Women’s Soccer Downed in Home-Opener by D’Youville

MARCY, N.Y. – It wasn't the home opener the Wildcats were looking for to be sure.

After playing the visiting Spartans to just a 1-0 deficit in the first half, SUNYIT surrendered 4 goals in the second drop their first game of the season.

The star for D'Youville on the day was Rebecca Alvira. The sophomore finished the day with a hat-trick, going on to score 2 goals in the second half after netting the game's first goal at the 24-minute mark.

Joining Alvira on the Spartan stat sheet was Terra Juda, who finished with a score and an assist.

For the home team goalkeeper Maggie Werenczek (Mohake, N.Y. / Mohawk) did all she could, finishing the game with 11 saves including a spectacular diving one in the second half.

Offensively, the Wildcats best try came 12 minutes into the game when a prescient pass by senior Amanda Bohne (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) found Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) for a point-blank try in front of the goal. Unfortunately the Spartan keeper Christina Ventresca anticipated the shot, coming out to cut down the angle and bat Hanehan's shot away.

D'Youville will host Hiram on Sunday next, while the Wildcats will look to bounce back tomorrow as they host Oswego State at 3 pm.
