Wildcats Overwhelmed by Hawks, 8-2

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Wildcats (8-9-0, 7-4 NEAC) were blitzed by a strong Hartwick team Monday night, 8-2 at Wildcat Field. The visitors scored an even four goals in each half to dispatch with the home team.

The Wildcats were victimized in the main by Cristina Sicari. The junior forward recorded a hat-trick, and added an assist in the second half to finish with an incredible 7 points on the night. Right behind Sicari was senior Mackenzie Shipley. The 5-9 forward scored two goals and assisted on Sicari's third goal, which came in the 50th minute to put the Hawks up 5-1.

Junior goalkeeper Margaret Werenczak (Mohawk, N.Y. / Mohawk) took over for an injured Aubrey Campbell (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) in the 22nd minute of play. Werenczak did her best to withstand the Hawk onslaught, recording 9 saves on the day – including a few diving stops that drew praise from the crowd. Ultimately there was little she could do, however, as the Hawks drilled the Wildcats for 21 shots on goal.

Over on the Wildcats end, it was Katie Driscoll (Aurora, N.Y. / Southern Cayuga) who finally put SUNYIT on the board in the 33rd minute. Driscoll's goal was a sight to behold even with the Wildcats already down 3-0: a perfectly arching right-footer from just outside the penalty box that soared just over the Hawk keeper's head for the score.

Despite the loss, SUNYIT wrapped up a bid to the NEAC tournament with their 2-1 win over Cazenovia on Saturday. The Wildcats have just two regular season games remaining: this Wednesday against SUNY Canton, and against Keuka this Saturday. Both games will be held at home, with Saturday's match doubling as Senior Day for the Wildcats.
