Wildcats Control Play in 4-0 Win Over Wilson

MARCY, N.Y. – A pair of goals in the first half, and a pair in the second helped bookend a dominant performance by the SUNYIT Women's Soccer Team (3-2-0) on Saturday. The Wildcats controlled the game from wire to wire in beating the Wilson Phoenix (0-3-0) for the fifth-straight time.

SUNYIT controlled possession right from the start, as the Wildcats kept the ball in Phoenix territory for the first eight minutes of the game. During that time SUNYIT struck first, as Stephanie Wurz (Whitesboro, N.Y. /  Notre Dame HS) scored her 5th goal of the year just 1:56 into the contest.

Kristina Strang (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont HS), the hero of yesterday's win over St. Elizabeth, was credited with an assist on the play after her header was blocked by Wilson goalie Katie Murphy. Murphy was anything but bored on the day, as the Wildcats fired a whopping 36 shots her way, including 20 shots on goal. For her part the Phoenix keeper turned away 16 of those tries.

The Wildcats continued to pound the goal, finally breaking through in the 24th minute for their second goal. Amanda Bohne (Clay, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) started the play with a beautiful cross from the left side to Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater HS), who knocked it square into the right corner of the goal.

Hanehan tied Wurz to lead all scorers on the day with 2 goals, while Bohne paced SUNYIT with 8 shots and an assist.

In the second half the Wildcats continued to dominate the play, however were unable to make the score of the game fit their lopsided advantage until Stephanie Wurz scored her second goal in the 77th minute. The real story of the play, however, was SUNYIT captain Mirsada Velic (Utica, N.Y. / Utica-Proctor HS) getting in on the action with an assist. Velic contributed great minutes in the second half culminating in the assist to Wurz. The play started with a cross from Bohne; the pass set Velic up for a potential goal, but the unselfish captain found Wurz for a no-brainer right in front of the net.

In the 82nd minute SUNYIT scored their final goal on Abbey Hanehan's second score of the game. Veronica Metz (Morrisville, N.Y. / Morrisville-Eaton HS) assisted on the play.

Playing their second game in two days, SUNYIT was the beneficiary of some great minutes by Shelby Parker (Galway, N.Y. / Galway High School), Megan Peterson (Cassville, N.Y. / Mt. Markham HS), Dakota Hanley (Franklin, N.Y. / Franklin Central HS),Brittani Howell (Whitney Point, N.Y. / Whitney Point HS), and Erica Maisonet (Walkill, N.Y. / Walkill HS).

SUNYIT will finish the last leg of a three-game home stand on Thursday as they host the Albany College of Pharmacy. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
