Wildcats Split in Season-Opening Alfred University Tournament; Wurz and Driscoll Named to All-Tournament Team

ALFRED, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Women's Soccer Team (1-1-0) beat Sage College on Sunday with a convincing 5-2 victory. The Wildcats lost on the tournament's first day to host team Alfred University by a score of 3-1.

In Saturday's action the Saxons jumped out to a 3-0 lead at halftime and never looked back. Forward Rachael Williams scored two of the team's goals, and Mary Hendee added the other.

For the Wildcats, junior Stephanie Wurz (Whitesboro, N.Y. / Notre Dame) scored the team's only goal at roughly 6-and-a-half minutes into the second half. Wurz was assisted by midfielder Katie Driscoll (Aurora, N.Y. / Southern Cayuga) on the play.

After being beaten out of the gate in the first half on Saturday, the Wildcats seemed determined to be the aggressor on Sunday against the Gators of Sage College. Wurz again led the way, scoring just 4:03 into the game on an assist by Amanda Bohne (Clay, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse). Barely a minute later Wurz netted another to put SUNYIT up 2-0.

Despite the hot start, SUNYIT saw the game tied by a pair of goals scored by Nicole Maher and Danielle Kitsock. The eventful period would conclude, however, with a Kristina Strang (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont High School) goal at 29:24, followed by an Amanda Bohne goal at 35:04.

The Wildcat defense clamped down in the second half behind three saves from Aubrey Campbell (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn), and Katie Driscoll added with 5:07 left to give the game its final score of 5-2 in favor of SUNYIT.

Wurz finished with three goals on the weekend, and Driscoll with a goal and an assist. For their efforts both players were named to the All-Tournament team.

SUNYIT's next match and home opener will take place on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. The Wildcats play host to cross-town rival Utica College.
