Women's Soccer Holds off Penn State Berks to Secure Third Straight Victory

READING, PA – The SUNYIT women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over NEAC rival Penn State Berks Sunday to claim its third straight win and remain undefeated in conference play at 5-0, while improving to 7-2 overall.

Freshman Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal nine minutes into the contest when she took a baseline pass from senior Lauryne Zinter (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater) and fired a shot over the outstretched arms of Berks goalkeeper Cassidy Dawson.

The Lady Wildcats were able to hold on for the victory the rest of the way despite being out-shot 17-10 on the day and only taking one corner kick as opposed to six for Berks.  A big reason why was SUNYIT's strong play on defense, especially from freshman goalie Aubrey Campbell (Auburn, NY/Auburn), who finished with six saves and recorded her first shutout of the season.

"It was a nice defensive effort from us today," said head coach Tyler Renaud.  "(Senior defensive back) Samantha Reddington and Aubrey Campbell really stepped it up in our 18.  Samantha saved one off the line with an away header and Aubrey had some big stops.  We finally put a solid 90 minutes of play together."

The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow when they host Oswego State at the Wildcat Soccer Field.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
