Women's Soccer Concludes Spring Season with "Play Day" at Utica College; Team Captains Announced for 2010

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT women's soccer team completed its 2010 spring season with an overall record of 0-2-1 after a round robin "Play Day" on the campus of Utica College this past Sunday.

After starting off the day losing to Utica College 0-1, the Lady Wildcats went on to finish in a scoreless tie with Cazenovia College before falling to Hartwick College 0-2.  Despite the team's record, head coach Tyler Renaud was pleased with the effort of the 14 returning ladies for the 2010 regular season.

"Our midfield and defense played well in all three games, and we created some good chances in our offensive third building from the back," explained Renaud.  "Our strikers struggled in their efforts to score, taking one too many touches on multiple occasions, whereas I would have liked a quicker shot once they had the step of separation on our opponents.  All in all, it was productive and everyone did a nice job of putting our game plan on the field.  It was nice to give the ladies an opportunity to play leading into the closing week of the semester and provide them with motivation for the upcoming preseason."

Shortly after the conclusion of Play Day, Renaud announced that seniors Jane Burroughs (Fonda, NY/Fonda-Fultonville), Samantha Reddington (Poland, NY/Poland) and Cassie Moss (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) will be the team's captains for 2010.

"I think all three ladies have exhibited over the year the leadership traits needed to take us to the next level," Renaud said.  "Jane comes back from her first stint as team captain.  She is very approachable and I think both the team and the incoming recruiting class fed off her leadership style.  Samantha is the eyes of our team and does a nice job of noticing when our team needs to recover on counter attacks and push forward as we build up from our defensive and middle third.  She is our most vocal player and has done a fantastic job from her sweeper position.  Cassie brings to us the ability to communicate for the whole team.  Quiet on the field, she is not afraid to talk to the ladies off the pitch during halftime, post game and during training sessions.  She has welcomed her reserve role for 2010 and will be a major component in helping the coaching staff manage the bench when she is not in the game."

The 2010 incoming recruiting class will be announced after all acceptances and deposits are made.
