WLAX: Burdick Scores Her 100th Career Point in Wildcat's First NAC Win of the Season.

FARMINGTON, MAINE – The SUNY Poly women's lacrosse team won their first NAC game of the season on Saturday, 15-12 over Maine Farmington. The Wildcats got some clutch goals late to take a lead, ultimately going on a 4-1 stretch in the last 10 minutes to win. Molly Burdick scored her 100th career point in the game on what was her sixth goal of the game (8:19 – 4th). She is just the seventh player in program history to surpass 100 points. The Wildcats are now 2-7 this season with a 1-1 NAC record.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first quarter saw a closely contested battle, with the Beavers taking an early 2-0 lead on goals from McMinis. SUNY Poly responded with three consecutive goals, including scores from Patricia Vanlue, Kaitlin Kopcza, and Molly Burdick.

 

The Wildcats continued to dominate in the second quarter, outscoring the Beavers 5-1 to take an 8-3 lead at halftime. Burdick scored twice in the quarter and Kopcza added a goal and an assist.

 

In the third quarter, the Beavers came alive and scored four unanswered goals to cut SUNY Poly's lead to one. However, SUNY Poly responded, scoring three of the next four goals, including two from Burdick and one from Kopcza, to take an 11-8 lead heading into the final quarter.

 

In the fourth quarter, Farmington came out swinging, scoring three goals in three minutes to tie the game at 11. The Wildcats went on a 3-0 run to take back the lead with Burdick scoring two to complete her seven-goal performance and surpass the 100-career point mark. She is the seventh player to surpass 100 career points at SUNY Poly.

 

SUNY Poly outshot the Beavers 41-33 and won 22 draw controls to the Beavers' nine. The Wildcats defense also caused 12 turnovers and collected 15 ground balls.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Molly Burdick was impressive and pivotal to the Wildcat's success. She scored seven goals, had a pair of caused turnovers, and won five draw controls.
  • Kaitlin Kopcza had an outstanding game for the Wildcats. She scored four goals and had two assists. She also had a game-high 11 draw controls and three groundballs.
  • Rylie Fisher had a pair of goals for the Wildcats.
  • For Me.-Farmington, Ruby McMinis had a strong showing with four goals.
  • Kaya Backman had four points for Farmington with two goals and two assists.
  • Emily Stinson had a game-high five caused turnovers and had four groundballs.
  • Jaden Brown earned the win in goal for Poly. She made 15 saves on 27 shots faces.
  • Kate Nowell was tagged with the loss for Farmington. She made 13 saves.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will travel to Thomas College on Sunday to take on the Terriers in a NAC game. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
