WBB: Wildcats Drop Conference Game Against Kangaroos.

CANTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball team lost to SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon 76-42. The Wildcats were led by Alivia Turk, who scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, while also tallying 3 steals. She led the Wildcats in all three of those categories. With the loss, the Wildcats move to 6-16 on the season and 5-6 in North Atlantic Conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a few minutes of no scoring from both teams, the low-scoring first quarter would end with the Kangaroos maintaining a 12-5 lead. Both teams would pick it up offensively in the second quarter, as they would combine for 37 points. A Zilah Wright layup with 4:27 remaining in the half would get the Wildcats within seven points of the Kangaroos, cutting their lead to 19-12. A Faith Wagner three-pointer with :57 seconds remaining would once again cut the Kangaroos' lead to 7, but as time expired in the first half, Hope Anecito would make a three-pointer to give the Kangaroos a 32-22 lead heading into halftime Anecito would lead all scorers in the game with 22 points.

In the second half, the Kangaroos would use a strong third and fourth quarter to give themselves a large lead. The Wildcats would struggle to shoot the ball in the second half, which led to them being unable to cut into the halftime deficit. A strong second-half performance came from Alivia Turk, who scored all of her 10 points in the second half. Turk was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Alivia Turk and Sophia Murray led the Wildcats in scoring, while Hannah Shipley and Jordan French both added 5 points each off the bench.

  • Hope Anecito, Torie Moore, and Sierra Pabo all finished in double digits for the Kangaroos. Moore also grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

 

UP NEXT: 

The Wildcats will be back in action on Tuesday as they head to St. Lawrence for a non-conference matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 PM.
