UTICA, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball was beat Vermont State Johnson on Saturday afternoon 76-53 for their first win of the season. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 1-6 overall, and 1-2 in North Atlantic Conference play. The Wildcats were led by Alivia Turk, who had a career-high 28 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Alysa Jackson continued her strong first-year campaign by knocking down a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. A Hannah Shipley three-pointer on the next possession would extend the Wildcats lead to 6-0 before Gabrielle Wardwell would score the next seven points for the Badgers to give them a 7-6 lead. Alivia Turk and Amanda Sweet would make key baskets at the end of the quarter to give the Wildcats a 14-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Turk continued her strong day in the second quarter, helping the Wildcats maintain their and extend their lead. Jackson would make a layup with 1:12 remaining in the second quarter, and Turk would knock down a free-throw with :40 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 32-27 lead going into halftime.
The third quarter would prove to be the difference maker on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats won the quarter 31-16 and would hold onto the lead from there. Jackson would have an unbelievable third quarter, knocking down 5 three-pointers to give the Wildcats a comfortable lead. The Wildcats would win the fourth quarter 13-10 and cruise to a 76-53 victory.
NOTABLE STATISTICS:
- Alysa Jackson finished with a career-high 25 points, including 6-10 shooting from three-point range.
- Alivia Turk had a career-high 28 points and is now averaging 14.4ppg.
- Gabby Wardell had a team-high 27 points for the Badgers.
