WBB: Wildcats Earn a Pivotal Win Over Cobleskill 58-52.

UTICA, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball team earned a hard-fought win over Cobleskill on Friday night 58-52. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 8-0 in NAC West Division play, putting them firmly in 1st place in the West. With two games left a win tomorrow or next Saturday will secure the regular season West Division Title and the right to host the first two rounds of the NAC Championship Tournament. The Wildcats are now 11-11 this season with a 9-3 record in NAC play.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Wildcats and the Fighting Tigers played a tight first half with Cobleskill holding a one-point edge after the first quarter and a five-point lead at the half. The Wildcats erased the deficit in the third quarter, outscoring Cobleskill 18-10 to swing the game back in their favor. Lyrik Jackson scored six points in the third quarter. Molly Burdick and Ashley Reid each scored four points in the third. The Wildcats closed out the game in the fourth, taking the lead they built in the third to the finish line with their highest-scoring quarter of the game. Jackson, Reid, and Burdick again carried the scoring load with eight, five, and four points respectively.  

 

The Wildcats held the advantage in a few key categories. They won the rebounding battle 54-43, the second chance points battle 15-9, and had more points scored off of turnovers with 17 to Cobleskill's 10. Cobleskill shot the ball better statistically with a 31%-25% shooting percentage edge but Wildcats held a 20-point advantage on free throws made.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Lyrik Jackson led all scorers with a season-high 25 points. She scored 12 points from the charity stripe.
  • Hannah Cater had a team-high 13 points with a team-high 11 shots taken. She also had five rebounds, three steals, an assist, and a block.
  • Molly Burdick had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double with two blocks, an assist, and a steal.
  • Ashley Reid scored a career-high 11 points in the game with four rebounds, a pair of assists, and a steal.
  • Annie Canales had 12 points and three assists for Cobleskill.
  • Emily Satterday had a game-high 17 rebounds for Cobleskill.
  • Kierra Connor pulled down 13 rebounds for SUNY Poly and had a game-high three blocks.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will host their annual National Girls and Women in Sports fundraiser on Saturday. The event will include a fundraiser and a game at halftime featuring fourth and fifth grade players from a local girls' travel team. The Wildcats will host SUNY Delhi in a 1:00 PM game that could clinch the regular season West Division title for the Wildcats. The game will be streamed live on the SUNY Poly Sports Network (SPSN).
