WBB: Wildcats Complete Weekend Sweep With Win Over SUNY Canton 58-54.

CANTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep with a win over SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon. Molly Burdick, Lauren Denny, Kelsey Meca, and Lyrik Jackson all scored in double figures for the Wildcats. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 10-11 on the season and 8-3 in conference play. With the loss, the Kangaroos move to 11-10 on the season and 7-4 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After two Kangaroos baskets, Kelsey Meca would kick off the scoring for the Wildcats with a three-point jump shot on an assist from Lauren Denny to make it a 4-3 game. The balanced quarter would showcase each team trading baskets before a Lauren Denny jump shot tied the game at 11-11 going into the second quarter.

After a layup from the Kangaroos' Marijke Kroon to open the second quarter scoring, Ashley Reid would knock down a three-point shot for the Wildcats to give them a 14-13 lead, their first of the game. Two free throws from Kierra Connor would extend the Wildcats' lead to 16-13. The second quarter would prove to be extremely high scoring as the two teams scored a combined 37 points. The Wildcats would take a 31-28 lead going into halftime.

The Kangaroos would open up the second half with a 5-0 run to take back the lead before two Lauren Denny free throws tied the game at 33-33. A big shot from Lyrik Jackson with 1:56 remaining in the quarter would again tie the evenly matched game at 40-40. Two free throws from Emma Perez would give the Kangaroos a 42-40 lead going into the final quarter.

Lauren Denny continued her hot hand by knocking down a three-point shot on the first possession down the court to give the Wildcats their first lead of the quarter. With 3:20 to play, Kierra Connor would make a layup to extend the Wildcat's lead to 55-52. Lyrik Jackson would score the final three points for the Wildcats who held on for a 58-54 victory.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Lyrik Jackson led all Wildcats scorers with 15 points.

  • Hope Aniceto would lead the Kangaroos with 14 points.

  • Molly Burdick recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
