WBB: Molly Burdick Scores 21 Points in Win Over Cobleskill to Become SUNY Poly’s All-time Leading Scorer.

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball team beat SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Play 48-40. The low-scoring affair may have been considered a boring game offensively were it not for a record-breaking performance. Senior forward Molly Burdick, who ranks in the top 10 of nearly every category of the Wildcats record book, finally reached the summit, surpassing a mark set 11 years ago. In the third quarter, with a non-assuming made floater, Molly Burdick cemented her place in the SUNY Poly Record Book, surpassing the previous program record of 1,731 career points held by Lindsey Brognano '12. She ended the game with 21 points to give her 1,735 points, but maybe more importantly, led her team to a pivotal NAC win over the West Division-leading Cobleskill Fighting Tigers.

RECORD BROKEN:

With about 3:20 to play in the third quarter, a missed shot by Cobleskill set the stage for a record-breaking moment. Lauren Denny pulled down the rebound near the free-throw line and pushed the ball up the court. After crossing half-court, Denny made a great pass to Burdick with space at the top of the key. Burdick drove right, guarded by two Fighting Tiger defenders, but pulled up to shoot a right-handed floater. The shot was right on the money, hitting nothing but net to give Molly her 1,733rd career point and the spot atop the list as the SUNY Poly women's basketball All-time Leading Scorer.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The game was a slugfest to determine who would be at the top of the NAC West Division. Both teams struggled shooting the ball with the Wildcats and the Fighting Tigers both shooting around 26% from the field. The Wildcats gained the edge by scoring in the paint (32-28 points in the paint), scoring off turnovers (14-6 points off turnovers), and protecting the basketball (9-23 team turnovers).

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Entering the game, Molly Burdick needed 18 points to set the all-time scoring record. She scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds to record her 14th double-double of the season. She also had two steals, two assists, and a block for the Wildcats.
  • Lyrik Jackson had an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double in 35 minutes played for the Wildcats. The senior also had three assists and three steals.
  • Lauren Denny stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, a game-high five steals, a team-high four assists, and three rebounds.
  • Patricia Vanlue had eight rebounds.
  • Emily Satterday had a 10-point 24 rebound double-double for the Fighting Tigers. She also had a block and an assist in the game. She was the only Fighting Tiger who scored in the double-digits.
