WBB: Wildcats Drop Road Game to Clarkson University 67-62.

POTSDAM, N.Y. -  The SUNY Poly women's basketball team was defeated by Clarkson University 67-62 on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Wildcats move to 4-7 on the season. The Golden Knight improve to 3-5. Molly Burdick led the way for the Wildcats, recording 29 points and 14 rebounds.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Golden Knights would jump out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter, led by baskets from Elaina Porter and Cassidy Dumont. Molly Burdick would score the first two baskets for the Wildcats to cut the lead to 9-4 before a Lyrik Jackson three-pointer would cut the lead to 9-7. After teams exchanged baskets, Jackson would connect again from three-point range towards the end of the quarter to make it a 14-12 game going into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the back-and-forth game would continue, with both teams exchanging leads. Lauren Denny would give the Wildcats their first lead of the game with two free throws with 2:43 left in the quarter. The Golden Knights, however, would go on an 8-2 run to end the quarter to take a 32-27 lead into halftime.

Lyrik Jackson would hit a three-pointer out of halftime to cut the score to 32-30. The Golden Knights would extend the lead to 11 points with 1:06 remaining in the quarter on a jump shot from Veronica Tache before a Jackson layup would cut the lead to 49-40 going into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats would continue their tough play into the fourth quarter, continually chipping at the lead and staying within striking distance right until the end. A Molly Burdick three-pointer with 1:54 remaining would cut the lead to 58-56 before SUNY Poly would take a timeout. The Golden Knights would pull away, however, winning the non-conference matchup 67-62.

 

NOTABLE STATISTICS:

  • Molly Burdick and Lyrik Jackson would record 20+ point performances for the Wildcats.
  • Cassidy Dumont had a team-high 18 points for the Golden Knights.

 

UP NEXT: The Wildcats will travel to Maine Maritime on Friday, January 6th for a North Atlantic Conference matchup.  The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 PM.
