WBB: Wildcats Win Cross-Town Rivalry Game Against Utica University 69-53.

UTICA, N.Y. -  The SUNY Poly women's basketball team beat Utica University 69-53 on Tuesday evening. The Wildcats were led by 20-point performances from Lyrik Jackson and Molly Burdick. With the win, the Wildcats move to 2-3 on the season with North Atlantic Conference play starting on Friday evening.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Wildcats would get the scoring going right away as Molly Burdick would connect on a three-pointer with an assist from Lyrik Jackson. The combo would continue all night as they would combine for 47 of the Wildcats' 69 points. The Pioneers and Wildcats would trade blows early in the first quarter, with a total of six lead changes happening in the first 17 minutes before the Wildcats would pull away to take a 24-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Pioneers would make it interesting, cutting the Wildcats' lead to 33-29 with a minute to go before a late Wildcats run would extend the lead to 40-29 going into halftime.

Kierra Connor would have a big third quarter for the Wildcats, scoring six of her eight points in the quarter while also grabbing five of her game-high ten rebounds. The Wildcats would continue to shoot the ball well the rest of the game, shooting 40.3% from the field.

 

NOTABLE STATISTICS:

  • Lyrik Jackson would lead all scorers with 24 points. She would also finish with eight rebounds and seven assists.
  • Kimberly Soriano would score a team-high 15 points for the Pioneers.
  • Lauren Denny would play a complete game for the Wildcats, scoring nine points, grabbing three rebounds, and having four assists in 40 minutes of play.
  • The Wildcats would win a few major statistical categories in route to the win, including rebounds, field goal percentage, assists, and turnovers.

 

UP NEXT: The Wildcats will be back at home on Friday, December 2nd at 5:30 PM against North Atlantic Conference opponent SUNY Canton.
