WBB: Fantastic Season for the Wildcats Comes to an End in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

AMHERST, Mass. - The fantastic 2021-22 season came to an end on Friday night for the Wildcats in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship Tournament. The Wildcats lost to #8 Amherst by a score of 60-42. The Wildcat's offense never really hit their stride, allowing Amherst to grow their lead. The Mammoths will advance to the second round to play John Fisher. The Wildcats end their season with a 20-7 record. 

 

Amherst came out hot in the first, scoring the first nine points of the game. Late in the first quarter, the Wildcats were able to cut the lead to two possessions, but a buzzer-beating jump shot pushed the lead to eight for Amherst. In the second, a 7-2 run to start the quarter gave the Mammoths a 13 point lead that was insurmountable for the Wildcats. Amherst would grow that lead to 21 late in the third quarter to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

 

NOTABLE STATS: 

  • Molly Burdick led the wildcats with 12 points and eight rebounds. She also had two steals and a block. 

  • Lyrik Jackson scored 10 for the Wildcats, had seven rebounds and a steal. 

  • Lauren Denny had nine points, four rebounds, a team-high three steals, and a team-high two assists. 

  • Dani Valdez led the Mammoths with 18 points (game-high) and had a team-high eight rebounds. She also had three assists, three steals, and a block. 

  • Reeya Patel scored 10 points for Amherst. She also had three rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.
