SUNYIT Defeats Wells in Overtime

MARCY N.Y. - The SUNYIT women's basketball team squared up against NEAC foe Wells College on Sunday afternoon. It was the Wildcat's second conference game in as many days. The game went into overtime after Wells was able to tie the game at the end of regulation.  SUNYIT went on to win the game in overtime by a score of 92-88

The game was a thriller. SUNYIT held the lead 78-76 with only 21 seconds remaining in regulation when Lindsay Achzet of Wells made a break-away layup off of an inbound play to tie the game at 78 with 13 seconds remaining. The Wildcats tried for the win with a last second jumper by senior Kayla McNeil (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) but the shot hit the front rim as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.  The Wildcats were able to secure the victory in overtime in large part to turnovers by Wells that led to 6 SUNYIT baskets.

Ashley Roser from Wells College had an outstanding game. The local from Camden, N.Y. scored an outstanding 39 points and had 27 rebounds, The 27 rebounds on the night put Ashley up over the 1,000 career rebounds mark and the 39 points was the highest single game scoring total in Wells basketball history.

Roser's efforts however were not enough to overcome the SUNYIT offensive duo of Abbey Hanahan (Stillwater, NY / Stillwater H.S.) and Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY / Rome Free Academy). Hanahan tied her season best with 30 points on the day. She shot nearly 65% from the field and had 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Brognano went for 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. She also had 2 steals and a block.

 The win brings the Wildcats record to 12-8(10-4 NEAC) and puts Wells College at 12-12 on the season. SUNYIT will travel on Wednesday (2/10) to take on CNY rival Cazenovia College. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start time.
