SB: Wildcats Dominate Wells In Non-Conference Play.

AURORA, N.Y. - SUNY Poly softball dominated their mid-week non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, beating Wells 12-0 (5 innings) and 18-0 (5 innings) to improve their season record to 9-4. The Wildcats had 32 hits in the two games and allowed just two hits, one in each game, to the Express.

 

GAME ONE:

SUNY Poly – 12

Wells – 0

WP: Trinity Critelli (6-1)

LP: Sara Mattle (0-7)

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Wildcats had an impressive showing with 12 runs on 14 hits and a strong pitching performance by Trinity Critelli. Critelli allowed just one hit, and struck out 10 batters in the shutout.

 

SUNY Poly scored three in the top of the first and four in the top of the second to take a commanding lead. They added a run in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the game in a 12-0 mercy rule.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Trinity Critelli was great on the mound and great at the plate. On the mound, she struck out 10 and allowed just one hit. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI.
  • Kimberly Birmingham went 2-for-4 in the game with a double, a home run, and a pair of RBI.
  • Ava Faragon went 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBI and a triple.
  • Gabriella Ellixson had a double, a triple, and a pair of RBI.
  • Amy DeSena had a pair of RBI, a hit, and a stolen base.

 

GAME TWO:

SUNY Poly – 18

Wells - 0

WP: Joy Stevens (2-0)

LP: Megan Litzenberger (0-4)

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Wildcats started strong, taking a six-run lead in the first three frames. SUNY Poly blew the game open in the fourth inning, scoring nine runs and sending 14 batters to the plate.

 

The SUNY Poly pitching staff had an excellent outing, allowing only one hit and striking out six batters. Joy Stevens started the game and pitched four innings, giving up only one hit and striking out four. Taylor Hunter pitched the fifth inning and retired the side in order.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Aeron Hamm had a great game, going 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. She also stole a base.
  • Kimberly Birmingham went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, including a double in the third inning that drove in a run.
  • Amy DeSena went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, including a double in the first inning that drove in a run.
  • Maddelyn Hoehn went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, including a double in the first inning that drove in a run.
  • Gabriella Ellixson went 1-for-3 with 3 RBI and 1 run scored, including a double in the fourth inning that drove in 2 runs.
  • Meghan Peek reached base in all three of her at-bats with a hit and a pair of walks. She scored twice.
  • Ava Faragon and Kelly Powell both went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Faragon also had an RBI.
  • Joy Stevens and Taylor Hunter combined for a shutout, allowing just 1 hit and no runs in 5 innings of work. Stevens pitched the first 4 innings, striking out 4 and allowing no hits, while Hunter pitched the final inning, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk but no runs.

 

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats will host Cobleskill on Friday and Saturday in their opening series of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play. The Wildcats will play one game at 4:00 PM on Friday afternoon and two games, starting at 12:00 PM on Saturday.
