Softball Sweeps Morrisville Behind Stellar Pitching Performance from Reinold, Timely Hitting

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNY Polytechnic Softball Team leaned on its ace Fallon Reinold in the first game of a doubleheader with the Morrisville State Mustangs on Saturday afternoon, then responded with timely hits in the second game to sweep the NEAC doubleheader.

The Wildcats only managed 2 runs on 3 hits in the first game, but it ended up being plenty as ace hurler Fallon Reinold was nearly untouchable. The junior right-hander pitched a complete-game 2-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking just one.

Reinold struck out the side in the 5th inning, and at one point in the game K'd six batters in a row.

Danielle Witchley provided the offensive spark for the 'Cats, ripping  a double to the fence in left field with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th inning. It was the first hit of the game for the Wildcats as Mustang hurler Alison McGuire had nearly equaled Reinold's performance through the first 4 innings. Witchley scored on the next play, a single by Abigail Coyne to left.

In game two the Wildcats got things going a little earlier, scoring 1 run in the 3rd and 4th innings then opening up for 3 in the 5th.

Bridget Ashmore scattered 7 hits through 5 innings for the Wildcats, and worked her way out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the 4th by allowing just 2 runs. It could have been much worse, but the Wildcat defense stepped up with a crucial double-play with the bases loaded, with shortstop Angela Bartlett firing to home after a short groundball to get the lead runner, then Coyne whipping it to Krista Pristera at third for the second out.

RBI singles by Reinold and Lindsey Leone helped the Wildcats towards a 3-run performance in the bottom of the 5th, helping to break the 2-2 tie. Again the inning was started by a Witchley double, this time off the bottom of the wall in center field.

The Mustangs mounted a comeback in the top of the 7th, but Samantha Stewart left the tying run on the bases by striking out Holly Gamlen to end the game and pick up her 2nd save of the year. Ashmore earned the win to improve her season record to 3-5.

Reinold, Leone, and Witchley all recorded 2 hits and an RBI in the win.

SUNY Poly will host another doubleheader tomorrow at 1:00 pm versus Cazenovia. The team will celebrate Senior Day during the games.
