MSOC: SUNY Poly Ties MCLA 3-3 in Season Opener

NORTH ADAMS, MA – The SUNY Poly Men's soccer team opened up the 2015 season on Tuesday in come from behind fashion. The first half of the game was all Trailblazers as MCLA went up 3-0 with two goals in the 15th minute and one in the 23rd. The Wildcats would show some serious guts in the second half with shut down defense and some great goals late to tie it up 3-3 in regulation. The match however, ended in a tie after two scoreless OT periods.

MCLA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a goal by Junior Anthony Basile in the 15th minute of the game. Senior Tyler Verona scored just 40 seconds later on a deflected shot that was able to find the back of the net giving the Trailblazers a 2-0 lead. The third and final goal of the game for MCLA came off the foot of Dylan Pereira in the 23rd minute off of a pass from Edward Boateng. At the conclusion of the first half it looked as if SUNY Poly was going to suffer its first loss of the season, but the Cats struck back.

The second half started with a spark of life from junior Grant Calogero (Utica, N.Y. / Notre Dame Jr./Sr.) who scored the Wildcats first goal of the season just 50 seconds into the second half. The goal was just what was needed to start up the Wildcats offence as they scored again late to cut the deficit to just one goal in the 73rd minute. The goal by Marco Batista (Blavelt, N.Y. / Tappen Zee H.S.) was followed shortly after by the Wildcats third unassisted goal of the game. Junior Nick Mcbride (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Mohonasen) was the man to deliver the tying goal when he slipped a shot into the lower left corner of the net. The goal just before the the 80th minute was the last for either team.

Neither team was able to score in OT. Both teams threatened on multiple occasions, but neither was able to break the stalemate. The game ended in a 3-3 tie bringing the records for both team to 0-0-1. The Wildcats will play their next game on the road vs. John Jay. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 start on Saturday, September 5th.
