Wildcats Stay Unbeaten Behind Pair of Freshmen Goals

MARCY, N.Y. – The 2013 SUNYIT Men's Soccer Team is deep.

On Sunday the Wildcats showcased that depth, as first freshman Nicholas McBride (Schenectady, N.Y. / Mohonasen) and then Tyler Plows (West Winfield, N.Y. / Mt. Markham) came through with scores in a 2-0 SUNYIT victory over Lancaster Bible College.

McBride scored his first career goal 22 minutes and 41 seconds into the contest. The play started with a great takeaway by Kureem Williams (Mt. Vernon, N.Y. / TCI), who then punched a terrific lead pass inside the goalie box. McBride followed with a great play to track down the ball, slicing through two defenders and then beating another to the ball before rolling a shot to the opposite corner of the Charger goal.

The Chargers, for their part, had a decent try on a free kick towards the end of the first half, but the header from a Charger forward sailed high. After that, it was all Wildcats, as the home team relentlessly attacked the Charger side of the field.

The Chargers parried attack after attack until finally Plows broke through with his first collegiate goal. A great deal of credit for the play belonged as well to SUNYIT sophomore Luke Bogar (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford). Bogar lofted a perfect forward pass that was expertly handled by Plows. The freshman caught the high-arching pass and then ripped a wicked left-footer from outside the box to the opposite corner, beating a diving Stefan Smith (Charger goalie).

Of course, the unsung hero of the game was the Wildcat defense. SUNYIT allowed just 2 shots all day, blanketing the Lancaster offense for the full 90 minutes.

The Wildcats improve to 4-0-1 (2-0 NEAC) on the season with the win, while the Chargers drop to 1-3-1. SUNYIT will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Hamilton College in a 6:30 pm matchup.
