SUNYIT Takes Regular Season Championship After 1-1 Tie in Keuka

KEUKA, N.Y. – The SUNYIT men's soccer team (7-5-4, 7-0-3 NEAC) tied for the third game in a row on Saturday, 1-1 at Keuka (8-4-2, 5-3-2). SUNYIT had already wrapped up the regular season championship with a 7-0-3 NEAC record before the game, and will host the conference tournament this weekend.

The Wildcats scored an early lead when Leighton Francis (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Delhi) received a cross from youngster Regan Seydler (Castorland, N.Y. / Lowville) in the 28th minute and capitalized past Keuka keeper Derek Condon. The play gave Francis his first goal of the season, and Seydler his second assist.

The vaunted SUNYIT defense would hold for the next 48 minutes, but, in keeping with an unfortunate trend, broke late when sophomore Frank Iacovangelo beat Malick Faye (Bronx, N.Y. / MLK) to even the game at 1-1. It was only the second goal allowed by Faye in conference play this season.

Nevertheless, by going undefeated in conference play (7-0-3) the Wildcats wrapped up their second-straight regular season championship and the right to host the NEAC tournament. SUNYIT will play the winner of Lancaster Bible College vs. Keuka (2:00 pm on Tuesday) on Saturday.

Tournament details and game times to be posted later in the day.
