SUNYIT Moves to 7-0 in Conference With Win Over Cobleskill

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT Men's Soccer Team (7-5-1, 7-0 NEAC) defeated SUNY Cobleskill (3-10, 2-4 NEAC) on Tuesday by a score of 3 to 0. Junior Forward Joe Pfaffenbereger (Chester, NY/Warwick Valley) recorded two assists and a goal on the day, as the Wildcats recorded their sixth league shutout. The Wildcats have allowed just one goal in league play this year, as they lead the NEAC with a 7-0 record.

As it turned out, SUNYIT got all the offense they would need barely seven minutes into the contest, as junior midfielder Matthew Owusu (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) received a pass from Pfaffenbereger and rolled it past Tiger keeper Patrick Cobane for the game's first score.

Seventeen minutes later Owusu returned the favor, assisting on Pfaffenbereger's goal. When asked about Pfaffenbereger's performance, Coach Pete Jerome had this to say:

"Joe's been here three years and I've always told him year three is a big year. He's been huge this year – I don't know what we would've done without Joe, really. We hope he continues to make progress and to get better because as we move down the line here he's going to be a big key to our success."

In the second half Pfaffenbereger anticipated his coach's praise with a brilliant cross to junior midfielder Cameron Adams (Groton, NY/Tompkins Cortland). Adams, for his part, made a terrific play in tracking down the pass, tapping it into the net just milliseconds before he would've run out of room.

Of course, despite the offense, SUNYIT's defense was the story as usual. When asked about the fact that his team had allowed just one goal in conference play so far this year, Coach Jerome responded, "It really hasn't hit home yet," adding, "We've played great defense, but that's something we've always prided ourselves on anyway."

SUNYIT will return to the field this Saturday for another home contest versus the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
