Men's Soccer Wins a 1-0 Thriller in Double Overtime; Raise Money for Breast Cancer Awareness

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT men's soccer team defeated Cazenovia 1-0 in a thrilling double-overtime victory at the Wildcat Soccer Field Saturday.  The Wildcats are now 7-1 in the NEAC and 10-5 overall, while Cazenovia dropped to 3-4-1 in conference play and 3-8-1 overall.

The success didn't just end with a victory for SUNYIT on the day.  In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Wildcats wore pink jerseys that were donated by SUNYIT bookstore staff manager Ken Palmer, while also collecting donations from the crowd throughout the contest.  The team raised nearly $100 during the game that will be donated to SUNYIT's campus-wide Breast Cancer Awareness group, "Team Violette."

Both teams had their chances to score in this one, as each side had one of their shots on goal bang off the crossbar.  SUNYIT was finally able to find of the back of the net with just under four minutes left in double overtime when freshman Diego Montaleza (New York, NY/MLK) delivered a corner kick to senior Dennis Owusu-Ansah (Bronx, NY/Harry S. Truman), who was able to put a header past Cazenovia goalie Sam Cimino.

SUNYIT freshman goalie Malick Faye (Bronx, NY/MLK) made three saves on the day and recorded his fifth shoutout of the year, while Cimino stopped seven shots for Cazenovia.

The Wildcats will be back in action this Tuesday when they host The Sage Colleges at the Wildcat Soccer Field.  Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
