MLAX: Wildcats Dominate NAC Championship Game 25-8, Advance to the NCAA Tournament.

MARCY, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's lacrosse team won their first-ever Conference Championship on Saturday 25-8 over North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opponent Husson University. The win keeps the Wildcats out of the loss column this season with a 10-0 overall record. The win gives the Wildcats their first-ever AQ bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament.

 

Husson got off to a hot start in the first going up 2-0 in the first five minutes on goals from Gunner McAllister and Matthew Boynton. SUNY Poly answered back with an Andrew Maycock goal just a minute later and went go on a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead in the first quarter. Poly kept up the pressure in the second quarter scoring six unanswered goals to close out the first half with a 15-5 lead. The high-powered Poly offense would continue to score in bunches. Netting another 10 goals in the second half. The big deficit proved to be too much for Husson to overcome. The final score was 25-8 in favor of the Wildcats.

 

The Wildcats were very efficient as a team on both ends of the field. SUNY Poly put 31 shots on goal and held Husson to just 14. The Wildcat defense forced 22 turnovers and held a 49-32 groundball advantage. Husson had the advantage in the faceoff circle. Shawn Ragaglia was great, going 20-36 on faceoffs for the Eagles. Nine of SUNY Poly's 25 goals were facilitated by an assist. Husson had just one assist as a team.

 

After the game, the North Atlantic Conference named the 2021 NAC Championship All-Tournament Team. Four Wildcats earned honors including the NAC Tournament MVP Edward Rosaschi. The All-Tournament Team was as follows:

GAME NOTES:

  • Brody Guido tied a career-high with six points in the game. The junior had four assists and a pair of goals. He also picked up three groundballs.
  • Amelio Ripa and Andrew Maycock each netted four goals. Maycock also had a groundball in the game.
  • Robert Pollock had a career-high three goals for the Wildcats. He also had three caused turnovers and four groundballs.
  • Shane Wyman scored three goals in the game. He scored on all three of his shots taken in the game.
  • Edward Rosaschi had a pair of goals in the game. He had a total of eight points on five goals and three assists in the two tournament games he played. Those numbers earned him the Tournament MVP. Rosaschi is now just four points shy of 200 in his illustrious career.
  • Rhett Stauffer had three points for the Wildcats. He scored a goal and dished out a pair of assists.
  • Ryan Mead and Jackson Murphy had two points each. Both scored one goal and had an assist.
  • Matthew Johnson improved to 10-0 in goal this season with a five save performance. He has 76 saves this season.
  • Joseph Fontanella led all players with five caused turnovers for SUNY Poly. He has 15 CTs on the year.
  • Steven Sullivan had three caused turnovers in the game and picked up a pair of groundballs.
  • Dillon May had a team-high five groundballs in the game. He went 14-28 on faceoffs.
  • Husson's Gunner McAllister had two goals for the Eagles. He also had five groundballs and caused a turnover.
  • Jaden Wells also had two goals for Husson.
  • Danny Carter, Ben Huynh, Matthew Boynton, and Roman Dennis each scored a goal for the Eagles in the game.
  • Jacob Larochelle had a game-high 13 groundballs and went 20-36 on faceoffs.
  • Roman Dennis had seven groundballs and forced two turnovers for the Husson defense.
  • Shawn Ragaglia was the goalie of record for Husson. He made six saves.

 

UP NEXT:

With the Championship win, the Wildcats advance to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats will now await their seeding in the tournament. The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday, May 9th at 9:00 PM. The first round of the 2021 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 15th.
