MBB: Wildcats Battle For Conference Win Over SUNY Canton 83-79.

CANTON, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's basketball team beat SUNY Canton 83-79 on Saturday night. Four Wildcats scored in double figures en route to the North Atlantic Conference win. With the win, the Wildcats move to 11-11 on the season and 6-5 in conference play. With the loss, the Kangaroos move to 6-15 on the season and 4-7 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Josh Ernst would make a layup with 18:49 in the first half to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. After a few Kangaroos baskets, Ernst would connect again to cut the Kangaroos' lead to 6-4 to score the first four Wildcats points. A Kangaroos run would give them a 15-7 lead before baskets from Jesse O'Dell and Mitch Kernizan would cut the Kangaroos lead to 15-13. The back-and-forth game would continue before a Dylan Ernst three would give the Wildcats the lead again with 5:39 to play in the half. A Demerill Levy jump shot would break the tied game with :32 in the half to give the Kangaroos a 48-46 lead going into halftime. 

With 12:26 in the second half, Cheickne Toure would tie the game at 58-58 before he connected again to give the Wildcats their first lead of the second half, 60-58. After the Kangaroos would retake the lead, Toure again would come up big for the Wildcats with two free throws to retake a 68-66 lead. The Wildcats would never look back from there, extending their lead and fighting off a few Kangaroos runs to hold onto an 83-79 victory. The win completes a weekend sweep for the Wildcats, who defeated NVU-Johnson on Friday night. The Wildcats get themselves back to .500 on the season with the win going into the last two weeks of the regular season.

 

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Cheickne Toure continued with the hot hand, leading all Wildcat scorers with 20 points and six assists.

  • Four SUNY Canton players finished in double-digit scoring.

  • Jesse O'Dell finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds to record a double-double

The Wildcats will be back on Friday, February 3rd for a home game against SUNY Cobleskill. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 PM.
