MBB: Wildcats Lose At Home To Husson University 64-61.

UTICA, N.Y. -  The SUNY Poly men's basketball was beaten by Husson University on Friday night 64-61 to open up North Atlantic Conference play. With the loss, the Wildcats move to 7-9 on the season and 2-4 in North Atlantic Conference play. With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-8 overall and 4-0 in North Atlantic Conference play.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED: Mitch Kernizan would get the scoring going Friday night, knocking down two free throws to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. After a Kernizan rebound, Cheickne Toure would hit a three-point jump shot to give the Wildcats an early 5-0 lead. The Wildcats would continue their early run, jumping out to an 11-1 lead before a few Eagles baskets would cut the lead to 13-8 at the 12:28 mark. Anthony Rose would answer with a basket to make the score 15-8 and would eventually finish the night with six points off the bench for the Wildcats. Strong defense throughout the half would continue, and the Wildcats would take a 33-30 lead going into halftime.

Corey Humbles would connect from three-point range for the Eagles out of halftime and tie the game at 33-33, before scoring on the next possession to give the Eagles their first lead of the night, 35-33. Jesse O'Dell and Cheickne Toure would be huge for the Wildcats in the second half, doing the majority of the scoring in the intense back-and-forth game that featured nine second-half lead changes. After a Wildcats timeout with 1:36 to play, Jesse O'Dell would score the next four points to give the Wildcats a 61-59 lead with :36 to play. Scott Lewis would hit a three-pointer with :27 left to give the Eagles the lead, who would hold on for the 64-61 victory.

 

NOTABLE STATISTICS:

  • Jesse O'Dell, Cheickne Toure, and Mitch Kernizan would score in double figures for the Wildcats.
  • Scott Lewis would have a team-high 17 points for the Eagles.
  • Toure would connect on four three-pointers to finish with the game-high 23 points.
