Hot Shooting Helps Men's Basketball Defeat Penn State Berks 90-83

UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT men's basketball team shot 55 percent from the field and registered its fourth straight victory with a 90-83 win over the visiting Penn State Berks Nittany Lions at the Campus Center Gymnasium Sunday.  The Wildcats are now 9-4 in the NEAC and back over the .500 mark at 10-9 overall, while Berks dropped to 6-6 in the conference and 6-12 overall.

Senior David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) continued his hot shooting from yesterday's victory over Penn State Abington, going 13-of-20 from the field and finishing with a game-high 28 points while also grabbing a game-high 17 rebounds, which matches his season high that he set one day ago.  As a team, the Wildcats hit 35 of their 64 field goal attempts.

After Berks took a quick 15-7 lead six minutes into the contest, SUNYIT scored eight straight points in the next four minutes to tie the game at 15 all.  The lead would exchange hands several times from there, but a 19-9 SUNYIT run to close the half would give the Wildcats a nine-point, 45-36 advantage at intermission.

SUNYIT would quickly build a double-digit lead in the opening minutes of the second half and never look back, going up by as much as 20 points before cruising to victory.

Sophomore Justin Brignola (Clifton Park, NY/The Sage Colleges) scored 14 points in 19 minutes off the bench, while senior Calvin Logins (Lyons, NY/Keuka College) finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists and junior Julian Bostick (Utica, NY/Herkimer County CC) added 11 points.  Senior Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) had a strong all-around game with seven points, a game-high nine assists, six boards, two steals and a block, as did junior Alex Grimmer (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) with six points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a team-high three steals.
