Men's Basketball Suffers 78-61 Setback to Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – With leading scorer David Golembiowski (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) out due to injury, the SUNYIT men's basketball team dropped its fourth straight contest with a 78-61 loss to Union College Wednesday night.  The Wildcats have now started the season at 0-4, while Union improved to 2-0.

Golembiowski, who is averaging a team-best 24.7 points per game, missed the contest due to a sprained ankle he suffered in Monday night's game against Hamilton College.  The Wildcats were still able to hang tough without him early on though, never being down by more than nine in the first half before heading into the break down two, 28-26.

The Wildcats were able to tie the game at 32 all with 17:37 left in the contest, but that's when Union would go on a 16-4 run in the next 5:32 to go up 48-36 with 12:05 left to play.  SUNYIT kept fighting and would twice cut the lead down to nine, but Union would prove to be too much down the stretch and would hold on for the victory.

Senior Calvin Logins (Lyons, NY/Keuka College) led SUNYIT with 22 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while sophomore Julian Bostick (Utica, NY/Herkimer County Community College) hit four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.  Senior Kevin Cappiello (Youngsville, NY/Sullivan West) registered nine points, six rebounds and two steals, while freshman Kyle McQueen (Richmond Hill, NY/HS for Construction) collected eight points and four boards in 24 minutes off the bench.

Justin Gallo scored 22 points to lead Union to victory, while Kevin Donohue finished with 17 points, eight boards and a game-high three blocks.  Matt Covucci posted 13 points, 12 rebounds and five steals and Drew Goldstein added 15 points.

The Wildcats will look to rebound this weekend when they head to Pennsylvania for a pair of NEAC contests.  They will first take on Penn State Berks on Saturday at 3:00 pm before squaring off against Penn State Abington on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
