BASE: Extra Innings Win Helps Wildcats Split With Cobleskill in Conference Doubleheader.

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly baseball team split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader on Saturday with Cobleskill. The Wildcats won game one 7-4 in extra innings, but lost game two 5-1. The win was the Wildcat's first of the 2021 season.

GAME ONE:

The game got off on the wrong foot for the Wildcats who gave up all four of the runs allowed in the first two innings. Cobleskill's Nick Thomas opened up the Tigers scoring with a solo home run in the opening frame. The second inning would see three more Cobleskill runs cross the plate on a sacrifice fly, an RBI single, and an error. Dylan Sheely, the Wildcats starting pitcher, found his stride in innings three, four, and five of work. He allowed no runs in his final three innings on the bump.

Kevin Flynn came into the game in the sixth inning with the Wildcats trailing 4-2 and was a magician with the baseball. In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats tied the game on a two-RBI single by Brad Dietz which drove home Zach Hyland and Chris Ling. Flynn would continue to dominate in the bottom of the seventh and the eighth innings setting down Cobleskill in order. In the top of the ninth, a leadoff single by Paul Barber would set the table for a two-out RBI single by Alexander Bonacci to take the lead. Kyle Liddy gave the Wildcats a bit of breathing room with a long two-run home run to give SUNY Poly a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Flynn again shut down the Tigers in order to secure his first win of the season.

GAME NOTES:

  • Jake Montrose had a big game for the Wildcats. He went 3-5 with an RBI.

  • Kevin Flynn threw four perfect innings in relief for  SUNY Poly, earning himself his first win this season. He struck out five batters.

GAME 2:

Game two's storyline was similar to game one. The difference being the winning team. Cobleskill again got off to a hot start, scoring all of their five runs in the first two innings. Nick Thomas opened ut Cobleskills scoring with a solo home run in the first. This time the early lead would be enough to earn the win as Cobleskill's Devin Lewis threw a gem of a game. He pitched six innings, allowed one run, struck out five, and walked no one. The lone run for the Wildcats was scored in the top of the fourth on a Chris Ling Sacrifice fly that scored Jake Montrose. The final score was 5-1.

GAME NOTES:

  • Chris Ling went 2-2 in the game with a pair of singles and an RBI on a sac fly.

  • Bradley Diez went 2-4 with two singles.
