MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly Women's Volleyball team beat Penn State Abington and St. Elizabeth on Saturday. The two wins were vital for the Wildcats as they move into 6th place in the NEAC standings with one conference game remaining. SUNY Poly was able to squeak by Penn State Abington in five sets in the first match of the day (25-12, 17-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-13). The Wildcats then swept St. Elizabeth in their second match (25-19, 25-16, 25-17). SUNY Poly is now 11-15 overall, and 6-4 in NEAC play this season.
MATCH 1:
The Wildcats came out strong in the first set of the day, as they were able to get out to a 12-4 lead over the visiting Nittany Lions. SUNY Poly would not look back, taking the first set by a score of 25-12. The second set was close, as both teams were tied 14-14. Abington would take over from there due in part to errors in serve receiving and passing by the Wildcats. The Nittany Lions would build on the momentum of their second set win by jumping out to an early lead in the third set. The Wildcats were unable to find their rhythm in the set, allowing Abington to take a 2-1 set advantage.
With their season on the line, SUNY Poly would fight back after a 5-0 deficit in the fourth set behind the serving effort of Senior Samantha Henry (Greenport, N.Y.). The Wildcats would run away with the set, forcing a fifth set for the first time this season.
The final set, as to be expected, was extremely close and intense throughout. SUNY Poly, however, would find a way to bring home the victory. Great team play was the answer for SUNY Poly as six Wildcats recorded kills in the final set.
MATCH 2:
The Wildcats looked like a different team in the second match of the day against St. Elizabeth. SUNY Poly never trailed in the first or second set. St. Elizabeth was able to fight back and take their first lead in the third set. That lead, however, would not last long and the Wildcats would take the third set to clinch their second crucial victory of the day.
NOTABLES:
- The Wildcats were again led by Karlie King (Liverpool, N.Y.), as she recorded a total of 25 kills on the day. She also had 26 digs and two service aces.
- Amanda Batten (Penfield, N.Y.) had a career high five service aces in the first match of the day for the Wildcats.
- Brittany Adams (Clifton Park, N.Y.) totaled 14 kills and Makayla Hulett (Colonie, N.Y.) added 13 kills for SUNY Poly.
- Andia Anderson led Penn State Abington with 16 kills against the Wildcats. Elizabeth Erhart tallied 10 kills for the Nittany Lions.
- SUNY Poly was able to hold St. Elizabeth to just 19 kills as a team, while the Wildcats totaled 36 in the match.
UP NEXT:
SUNY Poly will face SUNY Delhi on Monday October 22nd in a non-conference matchup. The Wildcats have won six of their previous seven matches. The match is set to begin at 7:00pm in the Wildcat Fieldhouse.
