WVB: Wildcats Go 3-1 in First NEAC Crossover of the 2016 Season.

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's volleyball team traveled to Cobleskill this past weekend to participate in their first NEAC Crossover event of the season. The Wildcats went 3-1 in their four games with wins over Gallaudet, Wilson, and Cobleskill. The Wildcats lone loss was to Morrisville State in five sets 2-3.

In their first game of the weekend the Wildcats took down the Tigers of Cobleskill in three sets 25-16, 25-18, 25-13. Ryenn Smith (Lyons, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with a match high nine kills. She also had nine digs. Finella Campanino (Phoenix, N.Y.) had a match high 10 digs and two service aces in the match. As a team the Wildcats hit a respectable .235 and had 11 service aces.

The second game on Saturday was the most anticipated of the bunch for the Wildcats who were looking for revenge after the loss to Gallaudet last season in the NEAC Championship. The Wildcats got what they were looking for with a 3-1 win 25-23, 17-25, 25-15, 25-21. Ryenn Smith had her best match of the season registering a whopping 19 kills on 40 attempts for a .325 hitting percentage. Her counterpart on the right side Emma Larson (Miller Place, N.Y.) had 10 kills in the match and had a match high 21 digs. The Wildcats hit .244 as a team in the match.

On Sunday the Wildcats faced off with the newly formed Wilson College volleyball team. Poly emerged with a quick three set win over the Phoenix 25-8, 25-17, 25-14. The Wildcats played very well as a team in the match. They hit .368 and had 23 service aces. Lauren Knowles (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and Shelby Kostal (Greenport, N.Y.) each had a team high seven kills. Kostal hit .357, had four service aces, and had a team high seven digs. Knowles hit .214 on 14 swings.

The Wildcats lone loss came in the fourth and final match of the weekend against Morrisville. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first two sets but ran out of gas after a long weekend allowing the Mustangs to mount a big comeback; winning 3-2 in five sets. The Wildcats hit a weekend low .064 in the match as a team. Ryenn Smith had a team high 18 kills in the match bringing her season total to 142. Smith also had three service aces, 13 digs, and a block assist in the match. Sydney Johnson (Nine Mile Falls W.A.) had a solid 37 assists for the Wildcats bringing her season total up over the 350 mark (357). Johnson also had 10 digs and two service aces.

The Wildcats are now 6-6 on the season overall and are 3-1 in NEAC Play. The team is tied for second place with Morrisville and Gallaudet. The Wildcats will hit the road again next weekend for another NEAC event in Abington Pennsylvania where they will face St. Elizabeth and Penn State Abington on Saturday and Byrn Athyn on Sunday. Saturdays matches are scheduled for 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Sundays single match will be at 12:00 PM.
