WSOC: Freshmen Strike to Lead Wildcats Over Roos

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly Women's Soccer Team (2-0-1) got some help from the rookies of the team en route to a 3-0 win over SUNY Canton (0-3-0). Madisyn Proper (Vernon, N.Y. / VVS HS) and Meral Evke (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford HS) scored their first career goals, with Proper striking twice, to lift the Wildcats over the visiting Roos.

SUNY Poly controlled possession from the beginning of the game and it paid off in the seventh minute. Proper controlled an errant clear and ripped a shot from just outside the penalty box. The freshmen placed her shot just right to give the Wildcats the 1-0 advantage.

Nakeya Stedman (Sauquoit, N.Y.) was key in the next scoring play for SUNY Poly. The sophomore tracked a ball to the end line and was able to find a wide-open Evke in the middle of the box. Evke was able to easily slot the ball to the corner to gain the 2-0 lead.

Proper's second goal came towards the end of the first half when she was able to get a foot on a bouncing ball in the box. Canton was unable to clear the first attempt from the Wildcats and the freshman put home her second of the day.

Angela Bartlett (West Winfield, N.Y. ) earned the shutout in goal after recording three saves.

SUNY Poly returns to action on Saturday at Morrisville St. for their NEAC opener at 1:00.
