Women’s Lacrosse Bested by Roos, 18-10

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly Women's Lacrosse Team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by a score of 18-10. The Wildcats played the visitors even (7 to 7) in the second half but couldn't surmount Canton's early lead.

The Kangaroos scored the first 6 goals of the game. Krysta Beha (Marcy, N.Y. / Whitesboro) eventually put the Wildcats on the board with 13:19 to go in the half, an unassisted strike. She scored again minutes later on an assist from freshman Marianna Ames (West Carthage, N.Y. / Carthage).

The Wildcats finished the half down 11-3, as Robyn Carroll netted 5 first half scores for the away team.

SUNY Poly played a much tougher second half, as four different players found the net. Beha finished the game as the team's leading scorer with 5 goals and an assist. She also controlled an incredible 19 draw controls, and tied with Tierney McGlynn (Watervliet, N.Y. / Watervliet) for the team-lead in groundballs with 4. McGlynn, a defender, got involved offensively as well, scoring 2 goals on 3 shots.

The rest of the Wildcats scoring came from Meghan Serota (Black River, N.Y. / Carthage), Nicole DiPiazza (Colonie, N.Y. / Colonie), and Corrina Marconi (Rochester, N.Y. / Gates-Chili), all of whom added single goals. Ames led the Wildcats with 2 assists.

As for the Kangaroos, the speedy midfielder Carroll finished with a game-high 6 goals to go along with 2 assists. Tressa Goolden was next with 4 scores, and Hannah Christiansen had 3.

Ultimately the two teams' shot totals weren't too far apart compared with what one might expect in a lopsided affair. Goalkeeper Becca Kiefer helped guard the Kangaroo advantage by making 8 saves on the 18 shots-on-goal she faced.

The Wildcats will now prepare for another tough test as they head to Utica College this coming Tuesday, March 24th. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
