Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener to Fairleigh Dickinson – Florham

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The SUNYIT Women's Lacrosse Team (0-1, 0-0 NEAC) lost in their season opener on Monday, 15-2 to FDU-Florham (3-3). The game highlighted the sometimes arbitrary nature of the early season for spring sports, as in just their first match of the season the Wildcats were pitted against a team with 5 games already under its belt.

The Wildcats – in just the program's second year – were overwhelmed early in the form of a single player, as Katie Rolwood scored the first four goals of the game, all within the first 11 minutes, to give the FDU-Florham Devils a 4-0 lead.

Rolwood would finish the day with 6 goals to lead all scorers.

To their credit, the Wildcats showed some fight towards the end of the first half. Down 5-0, returning sophomore Jenna Lashua (Heuvelton, N.Y. / Heuvelton High School) scored SUNYIT's first goal of the season, with 11:58 to go in the half.

SUNYIT then turned in their best defensive stretch of the game to hold the Devils scoreless for the next 6 minutes until Laura Tolbert (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse High School) was able to net SUNYIT's second goal. Tolbert, a much ballyhooed freshman from the Syracuse area, scored the goal on an unassisted play at the 5:38 mark.

Just as the Wildcats had begun to show some life, however, the Devils answered back, as Ashley Schlindwein and Rolwood combined to score three goals in the final 4:30 of the first half. Schlindwein and Rolwood, in fact, combined for all 8 of the Devils' first half goals.

While the Wildcats trailed considerably in shots and draw controls, a bright spot for SUNYIT was groundballs, where the team actually led the Devils 12 to 11.

The Wildcats will play their final game of the trip on Wednesday, at noon, against the Fighting Scots of Gordon College.
