MARCY, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly softball team earned two big North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) wins on Saturday in a sweep of Wells College. The Wildcat offense came to life in both games scoring a combined 23 runs on 26 hits, 10 of which were for extra bases.

GAME 1

In game one the Wildcats took down the Express 14-9. Wells jumped ahead early 3-0 on a solo homerun and two RBI walks. The Express struck again in the second to make the game 4-0 but the Wildcats would trim the deficit by putting up two runs in the bottom of the second on a two RBI single by Leah Segerlin (Rochester, N.Y.). The Wildcats would hold Wells at four long enough for the offense to get in gear and tack on 12 runs over the next three innings. With a big lead, Elizabeth Riegler (Boonville, N.Y.) was able to get through the game and earn her fourth win of the season. She had eight strikeouts in seven innings for the Cats'.

Leah Segerlin had a career high five RBIs in the game going 4-4 with a double. Segerlin is leading the Wildcats with a .380 average this season and has a team high 22 RBIs. She is currently tied for fifth in the NEAC in RBIs.

Danielle Witchley (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Angela Bartlett (West Winfield, N.Y.) each had two RBIs in the game. Witchley went 3-5 with two doubles. She leads the Wildcats with 11 extra base hits this season. Bartlett went 2-4 with a triple. Bartlett has recorded a hit in 11 of her last 13 games and is leading the Wildcats with a .536 slugging percentage this season.  

Lindsey Leone (Whitesboro, N.Y.) went 3-5 in the game and scored three times out of the leadoff spot. Her on base percentage is now .417 on the season, third best on the Wildcat roster.

For Wells, Sydney Cullen and Lizzie Monnat both went 3-5 in the game. Cullen had an RBI. Naomi Kubo had a solo homerun in the top of the first. Kubo was also the pitcher of record for the Express, earning her fifth loss of the season after allowing 11 earned runs in 14 hits in six innings.

GAME 2

The Wildcats continued their hot hitting in game two, The Wildcats struck first in the bottom of the second inning on a Celine Laracuente (Utica, N.Y.) single up the middle that drove in Angela Bartlett. Wells would tie up the game in the top of the third on a single by Sydney Cullen that drove in Naomi Kubo, but that would be all for the Express in the game who were shut down by Celine Laracuente on the mound.

Laracuente, the junior pitcher for the Wildcats, threw six innings allowing just six hits and a run. The win improves her record to 5-6 on the year. Laracuente also went 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs.

Corinna Laracuente (Utica, N.Y.) went 1-3 in the game and had two stolen bases.

Angela Bartlett continued her hot hitting. The senior went 3-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Aliza Mathis (Boonville, N.Y.) had two hits in three at bats scoring two runs and had a stolen base in the game.

Leah Segerlin added to her RBI total by driving in two more runs in the sixth inning on a game-ending single that drove home Leone and Mathis to enact the mercy rule.

For Wells, no player had multiple hits. Sydney Cullen had the lone RBI for the Express. Baylee Pearce was credited with the loss on the mound after giving up six earned runs on 11 hits. Pearce struck out four batters and walked just one. Pearce also had a hit in the game, going 1-3.

With the two wins, the Wildcats improve to 13-13 on the season and are 8-8 in the NEAC. The team currently sits in fourth place in the NEAC North Division. The Cats' will host North Division Leading Keuka on Sunday in what could turn out to be a very important double header for the Wildcats playoff hopes. The first game of the double header is scheduled to start at noon at SUNY Poly's Wildcat Softball Field. The game is being dedicated to raising money for cancer research through the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Strikeout Cancer Program.  Raffles and prizes will take place during the game. A group of cancer survivors will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the first game.
