Wildcats Sweep First Conference Doubleheader

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The SUNYIT women's softball team swept a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games over host SUNY Cobleskill at Fighting Tiger Park by scores of 9-0 and 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon. SUNYIT gets off to a good start at 2-0 in conference play (6-5 overall) while the Fighting Tigers fall to 3-7 overall (0-2 NEAC).

In the opener, Wildcat junior hurler Erica Hovey (Dexter, N.Y. / Jefferson High School), pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out two and walking no one to record the victory as SUNYIT outhit the Fighting Tigers 15-to-3 in the contest.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Junior shortstop Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy) led the way for SUNYIT, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, three RBI and a pair of runs scored on the afternoon.

The Fighting Tigers battled back to make things interesting paced by sophomore shortstop Kelsey Dezalia (Slingerlands, N.Y./ Voorheesville High School), who slugged her second home run of the season and by senior centerfielder Noelle Gushlaw, Germantown, N.Y., Germantown High School, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the game.

SUNYIT will return to action on Saturday, hosting Morrisville State College for a league doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
